Italian manufacturer Piaggio have made for them a reputation world over for building some of the most sophisticated yet retro-themed scooters. Their flagship scooter, the Vespa 946, is an exercise in elegance and retro design, and is beautiful sight to behold on the streets. Now, Vespa have launched an even more exotic variant of the 946 in the USA, called the 946 ‘Bellissima’.
The Vespa 946 Bellissima has been designed to confer a feeling of specialty and exclusivity to the rider. If we were to describe its looks in one word, it would be ‘Wow!’ The scooter manages to look futuristic while seamlessly integrating the simplicity and classiness of the original Vespa design.
Piaggio have retained the fuel-injected 155cc engine from the standard 946. The monocoque frame is composed of steel, and the ancillary features, such as the side mirrors, side body panels, and the handlebar, are constructed out of lightweight aluminium. The scooter runs on 12-inch alloy wheels with a 120mm section width featuring on the front and a 130mm section width at the rear. The exclusivity doesn’t end there. 220mm diameter disc brakes on either ends with an ABS system and ASR electronic traction control should go a long way in ensuring that the scooter handles well, and comes to an instantaneous halt. The front and rear section use LED lights and the instrument cluster will feature an LCD display unit. The capacity of the petrol tank is 8.5 litres. While the Bellissima comes with a solo seat as standard, Piaggio does offer the option of adding a pillion perch as well.
The Vespa 946 Bellissima will be sold in two colours – Metallic Gray and Metallic Blue, and is priced at a not-so-lucrative $10,500 (Rs 6.46 lakhs) in the American market, where only 100 units are up for grabs. And if it is sold here, we expect the scooter to retail at an astounding Rs 14 lakhs!
Piaggio have had a good run with their scooters so far in the Indian market, and are even set to launch a new version of the Vespa VX125 this Diwali. The Vespa 946 was displayed at the 2014 Auto Expo earlier this year, and is expected to make ingress into India this year, but with the price being a stumbling block, it will be curious to see the strategy Piaggio will adopt to push it out onto the tarmac.
