Yamaha has gone ahead and silently launched in India their flagship superbikes, the high-tech 2015 YZF-R1 and its super-cool track-focussed variant, the YZF-R1M. Launched at the 2014 EICMA Motorcycle Expo in Italy, the 2015 R1 is the fastest and most powerful version in its 17-year history. It is also the fourth version to be launched in India, since it was first introduced in the country in 2007.
The 2015 R1 is a technological tour de force. It is powered by a 998cc in-line four-cylinder engine that produces 197.2 bhp and 112.4 Nm of torque. The bike also hosts numerous electronic rider aids, such as advanced traction control, launch control, a quickshifter, and linked brakes with ABS. The 2015 R1 also sports all-new styling, derived from Yamaha’s M1 MotoGP racer.
The 2015 R1M is a special track-focussed version of the stock R1. In addition to all the standard features of the R1, the R1M comes with carbon-fibre bodywork, electronically-adjustable Ohlins suspension, an on-board data-logger, magnesium wheels, and a wider rear tyre.
Yamaha has priced the 2015 R1 at Rs 22,34,300 (ex-showroom, Delhi), and the 2015 R1M at Rs 29,43,100 (ex-showroom, Delhi). In terms of competition, the R1 rivals the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, the BMW S1000RR, the Ducati 1299 Panigale, and the Aprilia RSV4 R, while the R1M goes against the BMW HP4, the Ducati 1199 Panigale R, and the Kawasaki Ninja H2. A shootout featuring all the aforementioned bikes on the Buddh International Circuit should make for one very interesting test.
