Six reasons why you MUST renew insurance for your bike

Believe it or not, according to experts, over 70% of the two-wheelers in India are running uninsured. That’s a whopping 7 for every 10 vehicles you see on the road! Most don't bother to renew their insurance policies after the first year. If you are one of them, we tell you some compelling reasons as to why you MUST renew your two-wheeler insurance every year without fail.

Bike Insurance

1. It is illegal to ride without insurance

According to Indian laws, it is mandatory for motorcycles to be insured, at least to cover for damages to third party. Wikipedia puts it a tad better as to why exactly you need it:

“A motor vehicle in a public place is potentially a dangerous and lethal instrument. Even when it is without its engine, or without petrol, if it is moved down on an incline, even unintentionally, it can cause considerable damage and human injury. Hence, unlike other properties which may be insured or not at the option of the owner, a motor vehicle is required by law to be insured in respect of the user's liability for death, bodily injury or damage to property of third party.”

2. For peace of mind from thefts

With two-wheeler thefts becoming increasingly rampant these days, it is not enough if you park your bike in a safe location. Insuring it will cover you in the unfortunate event of your bike being stolen. It will ensure you are back on the road as soon as possible, with the least damage to your wallet.

3. Because it will help pay your repair bills in case of an accident

Say, by some rotten luck, you have a minor spill. You’re safe, but your bike is damaged quite badly. If you have insurance, most of the costs will be borne by the insurance provider, thereby shielding you from some unplanned and exorbitant expenses. If not, well, you’ll have to take the bus, or, even worse, delve into your vacation funds to get your bike up and running.

4. It will help cover expensive hospital expenses in case of injury

While advances in medical sciences have made it possible to save the lives of numerous accident victims, medical treatment generally doesn’t come cheap. If by some misfortune, you are involved in an accident while riding your motorcycle, and you get hurt quite badly, your bike insurance will help you pay a major chunk of your hospital bills.

5. To ensure no one else pays for your mistake

While on the road, even a small lapse of judgement could lead to disastrous results. Say, you misjudge a gap between two vehicles and execute a risky overtake, only to find a person bang in the middle of your path, with no time to swerve or brake. That person could be the sole breadwinner of a family, with no means for expensive hospital treatment. If you have insured your two-wheeler, then it will cover the expenses occurred to that person. If not, you could be ruining a family’s life. Think about it.

6. To safeguard your family financially, in case of a fatal accident

Let’s be realistic here – we’re humans, and we’re all going to die one day. While all of us would love to live a healthy life for as long as we can, life isn’t always kind. Some meet their untimely demise whilst riding – be it due to their carelessness or that of others. If their family depends on them for their sustenance, such an incident would leave them in financial hardship, apart from suffering the emotional agony of losing a loved one. Motorcycle insurance provides monetary compensation in the case of debilitating injury, or loss of life.

If you are one amongst those who are riding around on a motorcycle without insurance, we hope that at least one of the aforementioned points drives home the importance of insuring your motorcycle. Ride safe!
