The year 2015 was a turning point in the performance bike segment. The number of products in this space grew rapidly during the year. Bikes belonging to the 150cc-400cc category were launched by most major manufacturers in India. Recently, the 200cc-250cc segment has gained a lot of attention from multiple bike brands. They are the in-demand bikes for the younger audience in the two wheeler market.
Hero Motocorp lacked an all-round performance bike in this segment. The Karizma series of bikes have not gained traction in the market. The company is now focussing on sporty, performance oriented street bikes. Hero has made its intention clear by unveiling the Xtreme 200S concept at the Delhi Auto Expo.
The attractive looking Xtreme 200 S is powered by a 200 cc, single cylinder, air-cooled engine that develops a peak power of 18.5 bhp at 8500 rpm and has a peak torque output of 17.2 Nm at 6000 rpm. The continued use of carburetor is disappointing as more and more manufacturers are moving towards Fuel injectors.
This engine is mated a 5-speed gearbox, which is frankly a bit disappointing. A 6-speed gearbox would have made more sense. The bike looks very similar to the current generation Xtreme Sports, which was launched last year. Points of difference include a new cowl on the fuel tank and a redesigned headlamp unit.
The bike is well equipped with useful features. The Xtreme 200 S is equipped with the following features:
The Xtreme 200 S makes sense as an entry level performance bike. However, without riding one, we can’t comment on whether the bike is any good. Also, Hero has stated that the bike will not be launched in India before 2017. Stay tuned for more information in this segment.
