Honda Bikes and Scooters in India for 2013

Friday, 25 January 2013

Honda Motorcycles and Scooter India (HMSI), is the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer and the largest scooter manufacturer in India. Until its entry in 2004, Honda was just a technical partner with Kinetic and Hero. Thanks to the introduction of game-changing products like the Activa and Unicorn, which offered higher levels of quality and reliability compared to the competition at a similar cost, Honda rapidly climbed up the sales charts, currently knocking on the doors of Bajaj and Hero MotoCorp. For the year 2013, Honda has a slew of new two-wheelers lined up for launch in India.

New Maxi scooter

Honda might be developing a new maxi-scooter for our market. A maxi-scooter is a scooter that is bigger and more powerful than the standard scooter, offering more performance and comfort on par with motorcycles. Maxi-scooters are not new to India, with Kinetic Motors launching the 165cc Blaze in 2006. Although the Blaze failed to excite buyers back then, today’s market is definitely more mature than before, open to accepting new products that embrace a different ideology, so now might be a good time to introduce variety in the scooter segment. Expect the scooter to displace atleast 150cc, with a power output of over 12 bhp. The maxi scooter will be pegged against motorcycles with a similar engine capacity.

2013 Honda CBR 500R

Overview

·         Power – 47 bhp

·         Expected price – Rs 4 Lakh (approx.)

The sub-Rs5 Lakh segment has witnessed some hot action over the past two years. Increased awareness on motorcycle riding as a hobby, combined with a growing population with a large disposable income has contributed to brisk sales in this segment. With Bajaj all set to launch the KTM Duke 390 and Kawasaki Ninja 300R in 2013, Honda would require a product that can offer an edge over better-established competition. This is where the new CBR 500R slots in. The CBR 500R is a sports bike that is powered by a 500cc liquid cooled parallel-twin, producing around 47bhp. Considering that the bike is expected to be launched at a price similar to the Kawasaki Ninja 300R, Honda seems to have an ace up its sleeves, as it offers a displacement and torque advantage over its rivals, along with a strong country-wide service network.
