Mercedes-AMG joins hands with MV Agusta, acquires 25% stake

By

It’s official! Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance vehicle division of Daimler AG, has signed a long-term cooperation agreement with Italian superbike manufacturers MV Agusta. This move sees the former acquiring a 25% interest in the latter. According to the agreement, Mercedes-AMG will work with MV Agusta in marketing and sales, and will appoint a member to the bike manufacturer’s board of directors, which means they will have a significant hand in the development of future MV Agusta superbikes.

Mercedes-AMG and MV Agusta Partnership

This is not Daimler AG’s first foray into the biking world; the company earlier had a marketing tie-up with Ducati, which was later called off post the latter's takeover by rivals Audi. With the new partnership in place, one can expect rapid expansion of operations at MV Agusta, which should help them take on the likes of their compatriots Ducati and Aprilia, and their Japanese rivals. Hopefully, this venture could also see the introduction of MV Agusta motorcycles in India, where Daimler has a big presence, and there is a fast-growing market for high-end superbikes.

Speaking on the partnership, Tobias Moers, Chief Executive of Mercedes-AMG said,  “In MV Agusta, we have found the perfect two-wheel partner for Mercedes-AMG. This is a manufacturer with a long tradition and Mercedes-AMG are connected not only by a long and successful racing history, but also by shared values and goals for the future – allowing the experience of utmost perfection, optimal performance and motorsport technology for the road.”

Giovanni Castiglioni, President and CEO of MV Agusta, commented, “MV Agusta and Mercedes-AMG are a perfect brand fit: Two complementary companies that stand for design, high performance and excellence. Mercedes-AMG will help MV Agusta to further expand globally and to accelerate our growth. The uniqueness of MV Agusta will further enhance Mercedes-AMG’s leadership in the high-performance segment.”
