Yamaha R25 250cc Sportbike Unveiled!

By Jaichandran Jayapalan

The wait is finally over! Yamaha today unveiled the much awaited R25 sport bike in Indonesia, as a part of its Revstation campaign. The R25 is a 250cc twin-cylinder sport bike that slots between the entry-level R125/R15 and the 600cc R6. This is Yamaha’s second quarter-litre sport bike ever, with only the TZR 250 preceding it.

Yamaha R25

Design-wise, the R25 looks very similar to the concept showcased worldwide last year, and carries forward the YZF-series DNA from the 1000cc R1 superbike and the M1 MotoGP race bike. The bike comes replete with a new perimeter chassis designed to be lightweight yet offer the best performance. The new 250cc twin-cylinder engine has a short-stroke design, and is an absolute screamer. It produces 35.5 bhp @ 12,000 rpm, 22.1 Nm of torque @ 10,000 rpm and revs all the way to a dizzyingly-high redline of 14,000 rpm! Given that the bike weighs 166 kgs, expect a 0-100 time just under the 7 second mark.

Going by the specifications, the R25 promises class-leading handling and performance, and as is the case with all Yamaha bikes, one can expect top-notch build quality, and reliability. All that’s left for the company to do is announce the India launch date and the price. If Yamaha manages to price the R25 at a point under Rs 3 lakhs on-road, it could potentially upset the Indian performance biking scene.
