Until recently, Yamaha was best known in India for top-notch motorcycles, but their scooters, the Ray and the recently launched Alpha have made great headway in the scooter market for a new entrant. Yamaha have now decided to kick things up a notch. They are harbouring plans of introducing an all-new 125cc scooter in the Indian market. If introduced, the scooter, codenamed 04X, will be Yamaha’s first venture into the 125cc scooter segment in India.
A few days ago, Yamaha promulgated the launch of a new 125cc scooter called ‘Nozza Grande’ in Vietnam. The Nozza Grande is an air-cooled and fuel injected vehicle with claims of an efficiency of 54kmpl. It is suggested that the soon to be launched 125cc scooter in India might be modeled on the Nozza Grande, which is codenamed similarly (08X).
The new scooter will be made at the new manufacturing plant in Chennai, which is expected to start functioning from November this year. The scooter may be launched sometime around April 2015.
The 125cc scooter segment has seen a resurgence off late, with the Honda Activa 125 being the latest entrant. Suzuki had been the undisputed leader in this segment, but with Honda and Yamaha joining the fray, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
