Yamaha unveils new 320cc YZF-R3 sports bike!

When Yamaha announced that their new quarter-litre sports bike, the R25 would be sold only in Indonesia, the collective sighs of dejection from enthusiasts across many countries, ours included, resonated soundly across the World Wide Web. There was a reason for this: bikes with an engine displacement of more than 250cc entail high taxes in Indonesia, hence the R25. For the rest of the world though, we get this:

Enter the YZF-R3. What you are looking at isn't the R25 with a new paint job, but a different bike altogether. Out goes the 250cc parallel twin, and in its place comes a 321cc unit with the same configuration. Power is up 6 bhp to 41, while weight stays pretty low at just 169kgs wet, only 3 kgs heavier than the R25. That gives the R3 an excellent power-to-weight ratio of 245bhp/ton, almost as good as the KTM RC390, but better than the Kawasaki Ninja 300. Visually, it looks just like the R25, and that isn't a bad thing. It is stunning, beautiful even, without being in your face. The R3 shares its chassis parts with its quarter-litre sibling, while all dimensions remain the same.

The R3 is expected to be launched in the Europe and USA by the end of 2014, and, if we are lucky, it could come to India by mid-2015. Expect the bike to be priced at around Rs 3.5 – Rs 4 lakhs. Boy, we can’t wait for this one to arrive!
